We leave the post-1990 experience to another report. In this report, we tell briefly the history of US uranium mining leading to the RECA. ![]() Ten years later, in June 2000, the US Congress passed and the president signed legislation amending the original law to correct for what were widely perceived as areas of unfairness in the original legislation. This act acknowledged responsibility for the historical mistreatment of uranium miners by the US government, the sole purchaser of uranium from 1948 to 1971, 1– 3 and made provision for financial compensation to miners with diseases that could be related to their mining experience. IN 1990, THE US CONGRESS passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).
